Clothing labels are what gives a brand a unique identity and differentiate it from its competitors. In addition, it adds authenticity to your brand and protect it from product counterfeit. There are many different kinds and styles of labels that we will be discussing in this article.
So if you want to add an element of branding in your apparels and give your clients the necessary information about a clothing piece, then you need to put a clothing label on your products. Let us first guide you with basictypes of labels and how they work for a product. There are four basic types of clothing labels. Here they are:
Woven labels are one of the most common types of labels that are used on apparels to show their brand, fabric, size, price and care instructions. Woven labels are made from threads. A woven label is made from a specific type of thread material and is named after that particular material.
Depending on its thread material, a woven label can be classified into three different types: (1) Damask label (2) satin label and (3)taffeta woven label. Just as youuse custom patches on clothes, you can use woven labels on a piece of clothing to denote its brand name, material and information for washing and ironing. Woven labels are largely used by high-end fashion and clothing brands since they look professional, chic, and stylish.
A printed label is any label that has information printed on it. It can be made from different materials including vinyl, metallic, and paper. A printed label is applied on clothing or on top of its packing to provide information to the users about its manufacturer, size, price, material type, and care.
A printed label is significantly cheaper than a woven label and can be produced in large numbers in a short period of time which makes it a more cost-effective printing label to put on a clothing item.
Heat Press Label
A heat press label or a tag-less label is another type of label that clothing brands use on apparel to inform the wearer about the company and other relevant information. A heat press label is commonly used on athleisure clothing.
A heat press label is printed directly onto a piece of clothing which doesn’t let the wearer feel it. So it adds more comfort to the wearer unlike other types of labels. Since heat press label is printed on a garment, they come into contact with the skin of the wearer and may fade after a time which makes them a less durable clothing label.
Hang tags or swing tags, as they are called in UK, are a type of clothinglabel that uses printed information and are used on an apparel product using a thread. Hang tags are relatively larger than other types of labels and can showmore information about a clothing product.
A hang tag might not be a more convenient option for labeling an apparel since it is easily removed from a product and can’t be permanently attached to a fabric.
Now, we will be looking at different styles of clothing labels and how they can be attached to a product. Generally, clothing labels are categorized in terms of their folds. Based on this criterion, these are some of the common styles of clothing labels:
A flat label is commonly used on collars of a shirt or T-shirt. They are used to showthe brand or size of the collar. Flat labels are easily attached on the collar and make it easier for the wearer to know the brand name and size of his collar.
End folded label is a more stylized version of a flat label. The only difference between these two types of labels is that an end-folded label is sewn into the fabric from the two ends, whereas a flat label is sewn into a fabric from only one end.
Center-folded Label or a loop label is another common style of label that is used on a clothing piece to denote its manufacturer name, brand identity andwashing and ironing instructions. The front panel of the label shows the brand name andlogo of the company, while the back panel gives instructions regarding the care of the clothing.
Book Fold Label
Book fold label or hem tag is a popular style of clothing label that is used on garments to denote the brand name or logo of a manufacturer. A book fold label is similar to a center folded label with the only exception that it has a bigger seam allowance which gives enough room to show your brand identity on both folds and let more people know the name of your brand.
Mitre Fold Label
Mitre fold label is another commonly used style of label that is used on apparels. It is designed with foldedends that point upwards. This type of labels not only displaysbrand information and care instructions but can also be used to hang the garment.
The aforementioned are some of the most common and popular styles of labels. Now, we will take a look at the different techniques to attach labels onto a garment.
Sewing (Sew On Label)
As its name suggests, a sew on label can be attached to a garment by sewing it onto the fabric. They are one of the most common techniques to attach a label onto a clothing piece and give it a more professional and chic look.
Ironing (Iron-On Label)
Ironing is another commonly used technique to attach a label to apparel. It works just like ironing custom made patches onto a garment which means you can attach this label to a garment using an iron. It comes with a heat-sensitive adhesive that activates when you iron the label over a garment and it gets firmly attached to a garment.
Using Adhesive (Peel-And-Stick Label)
A peel and stick label is just like what it sounds like. It works similar to a sticker and you can attach it to a piece of clothing by peeling the sticker and attach it to the garment. This is the easiest technique among others to attach a label onto a garment as you can simply peel and stick the label onto a garment. Clothing labels are an important part of branding and they add credibility to your product. Use any of the above-mentioned labels to reinforce authenticity to your product and give more exposure to your brand.
