Before you pick a cap color or send a logo, try this: ask three people on your team to put on a cap they already own and tell you what they hate about it.
Too tight. Too tall. Too hot. You'll hear it all in about a minute, and that answer shapes your custom baseball hats more than any logo decision will. So start with the heads, then the crown, then the fabric. Logo last.
Design my own cap: where do I actually start?
People who want to design their own cap usually start with the logo. Makes sense, it's the fun part. But the logo is the easy step. The hard step is picking a cap your crew will actually wear on a Tuesday, not just on photo day.
So here's the order that works:
- Who's wearing it (adults, women, kids, or all three)
- Crown shape: structured or unstructured, and how tall
- Fabric, mostly a question of heat
- Closure
- Logo, placement and thread colors
Get the first four right and the logo almost takes care of itself.
Picking custom baseball hats for the heads you've got
A mixed adult crew
Plenty of caps here have an adjustable strap. For a crew where nobody has given you a hat size, that's what you want. The Valucap 2260 is a good plain example: 100% cotton twill, a structured crown, mid profile and a hook-and-loop strap. Nothing fancy. Fits most adult heads.
Women on the team
A standard cap can sit low and wide on a smaller head. We get this call a lot after an order ships, so ask before you order. The Imperial L210P is the small-fit version of Imperial's performance cap, with a D-ring hook-and-loop strap. And the Infinity Her caps here are cut for women, like the SOPHIE, a structured, low-profile polyester cap with perforations for airflow.
Youth sizes
Kids' teams and family events need a smaller cap that still matches the adults. Some styles here have a youth twin. The Valucap 2260Y is the youth version of the 2260, same cotton twill and structured mid-profile crown. The Flexfit 6277Y is a youth stretch-fit cap, a 63/34/3 polyester, cotton and spandex twill with no strap at all. Put adult and youth on separate lines when you order. Saves a mix-up.
Structured or unstructured? This decides how your logo looks
A structured cap has a stiff backing behind the front panels, so the front stands up on its own. An unstructured cap has no backing, so the crown relaxes and follows your head.
Real talk. Embroidery sews into whatever is under it. A firm front gives the needle something to push against, so a structured cap shows a crisp, flat logo, and it's the safer pick for a company logo with small text. Unstructured caps like the Big Accessories BX001 (100% brushed cotton twill, low profile, self-fabric strap with a D-ring slider) look easy and casual. Lots of people love them. But a busy logo can pucker, which means the fabric bunches around the stitches, so we keep the design simpler on a soft front.
Profile matters too. That's how tall the crown sits. A mid-profile crown gives a logo more height; a low profile is sleeker but wants a wide, short logo. The Valucap 6440 Econ Cap sits in between the two worlds: a softly structured, low-profile crown in lightweight brushed cotton twill.
Counter tip: hold your logo up next to the cap photo at real size before you choose a low profile. Tall logos crowd the bill fast.
What about the back of the cap?
Closure sounds minor until you're handing caps to 30 people. A hook-and-loop strap (the Valucap 2260, the Imperial X210P) adjusts fast and fits the widest range. A self-fabric strap with a D-ring or brass slider, like on the BX001 and the EC7000, looks cleaner but takes a second longer to set. And a Flexfit stretch cap like the 6277Y has no strap at all, just a closed back that stretches, so it looks tidy but only covers the size range it's made for.
You'll find a lot of names in this category: Richardson, Flexfit, Imperial, Valucap, Big Accessories, DRI DUCK, econscious, LEGACY and more, plus Infinity Her for women's cuts. We don't pick by brand first. We pick by crown, fabric and closure, then see which brand has it in your color.
Which fabric for Houston heat?
Cotton twill is the classic. It takes thread really well and looks right on almost anyone. The econscious EC7000, for example, is an 8 oz organic cotton washed twill, unstructured, with a brass slider on the back.
But for crews outside from May to September, polyester performance caps earn their spot. The Imperial X210P is 100% recycled polyester, moisture-wicking (pulls sweat off your skin), with UPF 50+ sun protection listed, and it comes in a long list of colors. If your crew wants a mesh back, that's a different shape, and our trucker hats page has those. For more sweat-friendly picks, browse the performance hats too.
People ask us if cotton is "too hot" for summer. Not always. A light cotton cap in a pale color is fine for a lot of people. Dark polyester in direct sun can feel warmer than you'd think. Try one first.
For care, cotton twill can fade a bit in strong sun and gets salt lines from sweat, so a hand wash or a cool, gentle cycle and air dry keeps it looking right longer. Polyester shrugs off sweat better and dries fast. Neither one likes a hot dryer.
Custom caps with logo: placement, thread and what to send
Any custom cap maker will tell you the front panel is the main spot, and embroidery is the standard there. We'd stitch a cap before we'd try anything else. Raised thread just looks right on a cap.
- Front: your main logo, centered over the seam.
- Side: a website, a small icon, or a slogan.
- Back, above the strap. Short text only.
- Patch on the front, if your logo is very detailed or you want a textured look.
Every logo gets custom embroidery setup first, which starts with digitizing (turning the art into a stitch file the machine follows). On caps we digitize from the center out, so the design sits straight across that middle seam. Fewer thread colors keep a small cap logo cleaner. Simple wins here.
One downside, though. Some caps here already carry a factory design. DRI DUCK's trade and wildlife caps, like the DRI DUCK 3350 Trucking Cap, come with their own artwork, so your logo has to fit in the space left over. Great for some clubs. Not for every brand.
Send us your logo. We follow our Artwork Acceptance Policy on every file, and you see a mockup before anything gets made.
Ordering: one cap or a whole crew
There's no minimum. One cap is fine. Mix colors and styles in the same order if you want, and put youth and women's caps on their own lines.
Timing: the mockup takes 2–3 working days, then production is 7–10 working days after you approve it. Bigger orders take longer, so tell us your date early and we'll give you a real timeline.
Price comes down to the cap you pick, how many stitches the logo needs, how many spots you decorate and how many caps you order. For a number, ask for a quote with your logo and the style you like.
