Custom varsity jackets are short, snap-front jackets with rib-knit trim and contrast color blocking, decorated with letters, names and mascots. Schools, booster clubs, spirit squads and businesses choose them because nothing else says "team" quite as loudly.
This is a small, focused corner of our Jackets range, with only a handful of styles. That makes the decisions easier, and it means getting the decoration plan right matters more than browsing.
From letter sweater to jacket
Before there was a varsity jacket, there was a letter sweater. College athletes earned a school letter and wore it on a heavy knit sweater, and Harvard is often named among the earliest schools to award one. The Harvard Gazette's piece on varsity letter sweaters is a good read on the tradition, though which school did it first is still argued. Over time the sweater gave way to a shorter jacket that kept the letter, the school colors and the striped rib trim. That jacket is what most people picture today.
Varsity jacket vs letterman vs bomber
People use these words interchangeably. They shouldn't, at least not when ordering.
Letterman jacket. An award. A student earns the right to wear the school letter through sport, band, academics or other activities, and the patches and pins on it stand for real achievements. Schools usually control the colors and who may wear one. We keep those on a separate Letterman Jackets page.
Varsity jacket. The open version of the same look. Same short body, snap front, rib collar, cuffs and waistband, often with contrast sleeves, but nobody has to earn it. Booster clubs, cheer gyms, businesses and fashion brands all wear it.
Bomber jacket. A different family tree, descended from military flight jackets. Bombers usually zip up, have a smooth shell and plain trim, and carry no letter tradition. See Bomber Jackets for those. A hybrid like the Shaka Wear SHVBJ Unisex Varsity Bomber Jacket borrows varsity color blocking and puts it on a bomber-style body.
Choosing the build
Body and sleeves. The classic recipe is a wool or wool-blend body with leather sleeves. It's warm, heavy and expensive. Vinyl or synthetic-leather sleeves give a similar look for less and wipe clean. Fleece, satin and nylon builds are lighter and cheaper again, and they suit spirit wear well. Materials vary by style, so check each product page for the exact body and sleeve fabric.
Closure. Snaps are traditional, and they let a big chest letter sit flat. Zips show up more on bomber hybrids.
Collar. Most varsity jackets use a rib-knit collar. The Shaka Wear SHCVBJ Unisex Collared Varsity Jacket swaps that for a fold-down collar, which looks a little more grown-up for staff or alumni.
Lining and weight. A quilted lining adds warmth. A light poly lining keeps the jacket wearable on a mild night. Honestly, for a Gulf Coast winter, light is usually the right call.
Trim and style. Striped rib knit at collar, cuffs and hem is where school colors really show. The Augusta Sportswear 3610 Unisex Baseball Striped Jacket puts that striping on a lighter satin team-jacket body, and the Threadfast Apparel 364J Unisex Legend Jacket is a more modern take.
Sizing. Not every style comes in both youth and adult runs, so check before planning a program that covers middle school and varsity. Many people wear these over a hoodie and size up one.
Across the styles here you'll find Shaka Wear, Augusta Sportswear and Threadfast Apparel.
How to decorate a custom varsity jacket
Varsity decoration follows a layout most people recognize instantly:
Chest letter. A chenille letter on the left chest, commonly somewhere around 6 to 8 inches tall on adult sizes and smaller for youth.
Back arch. The school or team name arched across the shoulders, with a mascot or graphic underneath.
Sleeves. Graduation year on one sleeve, sport icons or achievement patches on the other.
Name. An embroidered first name or nickname on the right chest, often in script.
Letters and mascots are usually made as separate custom patches and sewn on, so the jacket and the letter can be ordered at different times. Names and years are usually direct custom embroidery. Script names and small numbers need careful embroidery digitizing or the detail gets lost in a textured body. If you're torn between a patch and direct stitching, our decoration method guide covers it.
For a company or club, we'd lean toward restraint: one embroidered chest logo and a small sleeve mark look sharp and don't try to imitate a school award.
Plan for lead time
Varsity jackets take longer than tees. Patches are produced separately, multi-spot decoration adds steps, and some styles have limited size stock. Give yourself several weeks, and more before football season and spring banquets, when everyone orders at once. Collecting sizes is usually the slowest part, so start there.
Houston schools and spirit programs
Around Houston, football, basketball, band, cheer and dance programs all wear varsity styling. Some common uses:
Booster club fundraisers. A satin or fleece jacket with a back arch and mascot sells well before homecoming.
Drill and spirit teams. Matching jackets with names on the chest look sharp at pep rallies and competitions.
Senior gifts. A graduation year on the sleeve makes a keepsake that isn't tied to a letter award.
Club sports. Select baseball, softball and volleyball teams use the look outside the school letter system.
Our winters are short, so most families want something that works on a 50-degree Friday night, not a snowstorm.
Varsity jacket FAQ
Can a business order varsity jackets? Yes. Anyone can wear the style. Only letterman awards are controlled by schools.
Do I need leather sleeves? No. Vinyl, fleece and satin builds keep the look at lower cost and weight.
Can the letter be added later? Yes. Patches are sewn on, so you can order the jacket first and letter it after an award.
How do I mix youth and adult sizes? Confirm the style covers both, then scale the letter and back art down for the smaller sizes.
