Custom backpacks are two-strap packs we decorate with your logo, from simple giveaway bags to padded laptop packs people carry every day. Buyers choose them because they carry weight more comfortably than any shoulder bag, and a pack that gets used daily keeps your name in front of people for years.
That comfort comes down to a bit of physics, and it's also the best way to choose one.
Two straps, and keeping the weight close
A messenger or tote hangs off one shoulder, so the body leans to balance it. A backpack splits the load across both shoulders and parks it along the spine, where the torso can carry it upright. People have known this for a very long time; Smithsonian Magazine has a good piece tracing backpack history from ancient carrying frames through Civil War-era kit to modern packs.
Where the weight sits inside matters just as much. A laptop carried at the outer edge pulls you backward like a lever; the same laptop pressed against your back feels lighter. Good packs put the laptop sleeve against the back panel, use wide padded straps and add a sternum or compression strap so the load doesn't swing. When you test a sample, fill it with what people really carry (laptop, charger, lunch, water) and walk around for ten minutes. An empty pack always feels fine.
Capacity: what the liters tell you
Capacity is listed in liters, and it's more useful than outside dimensions.
15 to 20 L: a light daypack for a tablet, a jacket and lunch.
20 to 30 L: the everyday school and commuter size. The Under Armour 1378415 Loudon 25L Backpack and the Nomadix RUK20RN 25L Rambler Rucksack both sit here.
30 L and up: room for gym clothes or an overnight.
Bigger isn't automatically better. A half-empty large pack sags and lets things shift around.
Laptop sleeves and the features that matter
Measure the device, not the screen. Sleeves are labeled for 13, 15 or 17 in laptops, but chunky work laptops and rugged cases often run bigger than the label suggests. A suspended sleeve that stops short of the bottom protects the laptop when someone drops the bag on a hard floor.
Other things we'd check on a sample:
A separate pocket for shoes or a damp towel.
Side pockets that actually hold a full water bottle.
A small top pocket for keys and phone.
A padded, ventilated back panel. In Houston humidity a flat foam back gets soaked on the walk from the parking lot.
Budget vs. premium: matching the pack to the job
Most packs use polyester, often 600D, which resists scuffs at a fair price. Nylon and ripstop weaves are lighter and stronger for their weight. Premium packs add better zippers, reinforced bases and denser strap foam.
The range on this page is wide:
The Liberty Bags 7709 16-inch Basic Backpack is the budget end, a sensible pick for large school or event giveaways. Liberty Bags also carries clear backpacks for venues and schools with bag rules.
Under Armour sits in the middle, with athletic layouts and water-resistant finishes.
The Oakley 24L Gearbox 5-Speed Backpack is at the premium end. Oakley packs lean technical and travel-ready.
Our honest view: a conference giveaway for 500 attendees and a backpack handed to a new engineer on day one are completely different purchases. Spend the money where people will carry the bag every day.
Where a logo can go on a backpack
Backpacks are full of foam, zippers and organizer panels, and not every surface can be put in an embroidery hoop.
Front pocket: the usual choice. A realistic embroidery area is often about 4 to 5 in wide, depending on the pocket size and what's sewn behind it.
Upper front panel: fine for a small wordmark if the panel opens fully.
Straps: too narrow and padded for most embroidery.
Embroidery needs access to the fabric from inside, so a pocket that's stitched shut or backed with foam may not work. That's where custom patches earn their keep: the patch is made separately and then sewn or heat-applied, so it can go on panels a hoop can't reach. Patches also suit technical fabrics that pucker under dense stitching. Want full-coverage color instead? See the Sublimated Backpacks page.
How this page relates to EMS backpacks and other bags
Medical response packs live in their own sibling category, EMS Backpacks. Those are built around kits, with clamshell openings, labeled pouches and wipe-clean materials, so start there for EMTs, athletic trainers or school nurses. Everything for school, work and travel is here. If two straps aren't what you need, Duffels carry bulky gear, and Drawstring bags are the lightweight giveaway option, all under the main Bags section.
Houston programs that use branded backpacks
Back to school: August is the busy month. PTOs, booster clubs and community groups in HISD, Cy-Fair, Katy, Fort Bend and other districts often order packs for student giveaways. Plan early, since summer production calendars fill up, and leave time to confirm the exact pack model before school supply lists go out.
Corporate onboarding: a branded laptop backpack holding a welcome kit is a strong first-day gesture.
Conferences: exhibitors and organizers at the George R. Brown Convention Center often hand out simpler packs to attendees.
Questions buyers ask about custom backpacks
Will my logo fit on the front pocket? Usually, at around 4 to 5 in wide, but pocket construction varies. We check the exact model before you approve.
Are these backpacks waterproof? Many shed light rain. Very few are waterproof unless the listing says so.
Do I need youth sizes? Most packs are one size. Elementary programs may prefer a smaller pack.
Can I order a mix of colors? Often yes, though thread colors may need adjusting per bag color.
Will any 15 in laptop fit a 15 in sleeve? Not always. Measure the laptop and compare it with the sleeve dimensions.
