A survey crew spends its day where nobody else wants to stand: on the shoulder of a feeder road, in a drainage ditch, at the edge of a new subdivision with trucks rolling by. Surveying uniforms are first about being seen. After that, they need to survive briars, mud, mosquitoes and Houston sun, and still look professional when the party chief meets a property owner at the fence line.
Surveying is one of the oldest technical trades, and around Houston it carries extra weight: on flat, wet ground, a few inches of elevation decide where water goes after a storm. Today your crews carry GNSS receivers, robotic total stations and drones, but the job is the same at its core: precise measurement that property lines, roads and pipelines depend on. Your crew's clothing should help them do that safely.
Dressing the crew by role
Party chiefs and instrument operators
Crew chiefs talk with clients, landowners and contractors, so a woven work shirt with the company logo works well. Look for a vented back, two chest pockets with flaps for a notebook and pencil, and a fabric that dries fast. In active roadways, a hi-vis vest goes over the top, or the shirt itself can be a certified hi-vis woven.
Rodmen and field technicians
These crew members cut line through brush, set stakes and wade through wet ground. Hi-vis tees or long-sleeve hi-vis shirts, durable work pants with reinforced knees and plenty of pockets, and a hat with a brim are the standard. Snag-resistant fabrics hold up better in brush.
Inspectors
Construction materials testers and field inspectors often move between sites and offices. Hi-vis polos or a regular polo with a hi-vis vest, plus work pants and a jacket, cover most days.
Drone pilots and office-based surveyors
Drone pilots still need hi-vis when working near roads or active sites. Office surveyors and CAD staff can wear the same branded polos as the field team for consistency. When an office tech gets pulled out to help with a boundary dispute or a quick topo shot, all they need to add is a vest from the truck, and they still look like part of the same company standing next to the crew.

Fabric for brush, bugs and bayou heat
Long sleeves are your friend in the field. A lightweight, breathable long-sleeve hi-vis shirt protects against sun, briars and insects better than a tee, and in the right fabric it can feel cooler. Moisture-wicking polyester is the go-to for hi-vis because it holds the fluorescent color well. Look for UPF ratings on the label if sun exposure is a concern.
Pants should be tough. Reinforced knees, a gusseted crotch and deep cargo pockets for a phone, field book and flagging tape make a real difference. Rain is part of the job on the Gulf Coast, so a hi-vis rain jacket and a packable windbreaker belong in every truck. A brimmed hat or a cap with a neck shade helps on long days at the tripod.
Hi-Vis rules and roadside safety
Survey and inspection crews often work in or near traffic, which makes high-visibility apparel essential. Hi-vis garments are typically certified to ANSI/ISEA 107, which sets performance classes based on the amount of fluorescent and reflective material. Which class you need depends on traffic speed, the work and the rules of the road owner or site. Many highway and public right-of-way jobs call for a Class 2 or Class 3 garment, so check the project specs and your safety plan.
Two rules apply to decoration. The certification on the garment's label is what makes it compliant, not anything added later. And logos must not cover or interrupt the reflective striping. Our hi-vis work vests and hi-vis woven shirts are popular options for survey crews. Teams working on pipeline corridors or plant sites may also need FR clothing, which carries its own certifications.
Logos that hold up outdoors
Embroidery is durable and looks professional on woven shirts, polos, jackets and caps. A left chest logo with the company name on the back of a vest or jacket helps landowners and contractors know who they're dealing with. Many firms add the crew chief's name to the right chest.
On hi-vis garments, place the logo in the fluorescent background area rather than over reflective tape, and keep it reasonably sized. For white or light-colored polyester performance tees used in the office or at company events, sublimation printing gives a soft, full-color design.
If you run crews out of more than one office, have one person own the uniform order so the Katy crew and the Pearland crew don't end up in different shades.
Buying tips for field crews
Outfit the truck. Every truck should carry spare hi-vis vests, a rain jacket and a few extra shirts for new hires or ripped sleeves.
Fit for climbing and kneeling. Surveyors climb embankments and kneel at monuments. Check shoulder room and inseam, and offer women's cuts in shirts and pants.
Plan the seasons. Lightweight long-sleeve hi-vis shirts in summer, insulated jackets for cold fronts and rain gear year-round.
Replace on condition. Hi-vis garments fade with sun and washing. Retire anything that looks dull or has worn reflective tape.
Keep your crew visible
Your crews do precise work in risky places. Explore survey crew workwear to compare hi-vis, shirts and outerwear, and request a quote from Houston Embroidery Service for embroidery across your team.
Frequently asked questions
What should surveyors wear in the field?
Surveyors usually wear hi-vis shirts or a hi-vis vest over a woven work shirt, durable work pants with reinforced knees and cargo pockets, and a brimmed hat. Long sleeves help protect against sun, brush and insects. A hi-vis rain jacket is essential for Gulf Coast weather, and FR clothing may be required on some pipeline or plant sites.
What hi-vis class do survey crews need?
It depends on traffic speed, the work and the road owner's or project's rules. Hi-vis apparel is commonly certified to ANSI/ISEA 107, which defines performance classes. Many highway and right-of-way jobs call for Class 2 or Class 3 garments. Check project specifications and your safety plan, and rely on the class shown on the garment label.
Can you add a company logo to hi-vis survey vests?
Yes. Place the logo on the fluorescent background area and keep it off the reflective striping so visibility isn't reduced. The vest's certification comes from the manufacturer, not the decoration. Many firms put a small left chest logo on the front and the company name on the back above or below the reflective tape.
Are long-sleeve shirts better for surveyors in Texas heat?
Often, yes. A lightweight, breathable long-sleeve shirt can protect against sun, briars and insects better than a tee, and moisture-wicking fabric helps keep crews cooler. Look for UPF ratings on the garment label if sun exposure is a concern, and choose hi-vis long-sleeve shirts for roadside work.
How often should hi-vis survey gear be replaced?
Replace hi-vis garments when the fluorescent color looks faded, the reflective tape is cracked or peeling, or the garment is torn or heavily soiled. Sun and frequent washing shorten their life. Keep spare vests and shirts in every truck so crews can swap out worn gear without waiting for a new order.
