Custom fleece jackets are lightweight polyester jackets with a brushed, lofted surface, embroidered with your logo, and they give a lot of warmth for very little weight. Buyers choose them because they're comfortable, easy to wash, quick to dry and warm enough for nearly every Houston winter day. For many people here, a good fleece is the only jacket they actually wear between December and February.
Where synthetic fleece came from
Wool kept people warm for centuries, but it's heavy when wet and slow to dry. In the 1970s, outdoor clothing makers started experimenting with polyester pile as an alternative. Patagonia describes its early work with pile and its collaboration with Malden Mills, the mill now known as Polartec, to develop a softer, lighter fleece in its story of fleece. Climbers adopted it first, and offices and schools followed for the same reason: warmth without bulk.
Why fleece is warm: it's mostly air
Fleece is made by brushing a polyester knit until the surface fibers stand up into a soft pile. Those fibers hold countless tiny pockets of still air, and still air is what insulates. Polyester absorbs very little water, so fleece dries quickly and stays reasonably warm when damp, which cotton sweatshirts don't.
That's also why weight on its own won't tell you how warm a jacket is. Two fleeces of similar weight can feel very different depending on how tall and dense the pile is. High-loft fleece traps more air and feels warmer but bulkier. Dense, low-pile fleece is thinner and layers easily under a shell.
The weak spot is wind. Ordinary fleece lets moving air straight through, which strips the warm layer away. On a gusty day, wear it under a wind-resistant shell or choose a bonded fleece with a wind-blocking layer built in.
Microfleece to sherpa: the range on this page
As a rough guide, fleece is often described in grams per square meter:
Microfleece, often somewhere around 100 to 150 gsm, is thin, light and smooth. It suits indoor staff and mild days. The Augusta Sportswear 6861 Revive Micro-Lite Fleece Jacket is a good example.
Midweight fleece, roughly 200 to 300 gsm, is the classic full-zip uniform jacket. The Columbia 212478 Steens Mountain 2.0 is a well-known outdoor-brand version.
Sherpa and high pile feel plush and look casual and textured. The Spyder S17940 Venture Sherpa Jacket shows that end of the range.
For uniform programs with taller staff, the Harriton M990T Men's Tall Fleece Jacket adds body and sleeve length so nobody's wrists are hanging out.
Columbia, Harriton and Spyder give you a spread from budget uniform fleece to recognizable outdoor labels.
Pilling and anti-pill finishes
Pilling is those little balls of fiber that form when fleece rubs against itself, a backpack strap or a car seat. Anti-pill finishes treat the surface so fibers resist tangling, and a jacket labeled anti-pill on one or both sides stays neater through daily wear. For a uniform piece that gets worn every day, it's worth paying a little more for.
Wash fleece inside out on a gentle cycle and keep dryer heat low, since high heat can mat the pile. Many fleeces now use recycled polyester, which performs much like virgin polyester. If your company has sustainability goals, check the fiber content on the product listing.
Sizing over other layers
Fleece jackets are usually cut with room for a shirt underneath. If staff will wear one over a sweater or under a shell, consider a size up. Check sleeve length, because fleece has little stretch at the cuff. Lines that include youth, women's and tall sizes make it much easier to outfit a mixed team so everyone gets a proper fit.
Embroidering custom fleece jackets without losing detail
Fleece takes embroidery well, with a few cautions. The pile can swallow stitches, especially small lettering and thin lines. Our usual approach:
Use a water-soluble topper on medium and high pile so the stitches sit on top instead of sinking.
Skip tiny text. Lettering under about a quarter inch tall tends to disappear.
Keep the left-chest logo around 3.5 inches wide with bold shapes and moderate density.
Use a firm backing so the stretchy knit doesn't pucker.
Custom embroidery is the standard method for fleece. A file built for smooth twill often needs adjusting, so ask for embroidery digitizing tuned to pile fabric. On sherpa and very high pile, a sewn patch usually looks cleaner than direct stitching.
Fleece as the Houston winter jacket
Houston winters are short and mild, with a few cold fronts and some damp, chilly mornings. A midweight fleece handles the school drop-off, the early commute and outdoor work until the afternoon warms up. A heavy parka would sit in the closet most years. A fleece actually gets worn.
It earns its keep indoors too, where offices, hospitals and schools often run the air-conditioning cold all year. A Houston company might choose microfleece for office staff and a midweight fleece for field technicians, both with the same embroidered logo.

Fleece jacket questions
Is heavier fleece always warmer? Not necessarily. Pile height and density matter as much as weight.
Will fleece block the wind? Standard fleece won't. Layer a shell over it or pick a wind-resistant fleece.
Why did our small logo look fuzzy? The pile swallowed the stitches. A topper and slightly larger lettering fix most cases.
Does fleece pill? Some pilling comes with use. Anti-pill finishes cut it down noticeably.
Embroidery or a patch on sherpa? A patch, nearly every time. The deep pile makes direct stitching look patchy.
