Custom Patches for Jackets: Chest, Sleeve and Back
Left chest is where most jacket patches end up. A left chest logo usually runs about 3 to 4 inches wide (that’s the standard chest spot on any garment), so a 3.5″ patch sits right. Crews and clubs like it because it looks clean on a work jacket and on a denim one.
Sleeve is the second spot. Good for a flag, a local number, a club name. Keep it smaller than the chest patch so the two don’t compete.
Back is the statement spot. On jackets we keep it to 5 inches, centered high, just under the collar seam or a bit lower. Simple as that.
Some customers want all three. That works, but pick one patch to be the “main” one and let the others be quiet.
Which Patch Type Fits Which Jacket?
Nearly every patch type below comes off the line at our overseas factory. Here’s how they line up on outerwear:
Embroidered is the everyday pick. Think of it as the logo stitched as a separate piece, apart from the jacket, and then sewn or pressed on. Before stitching, we digitize the logo, converting it into a file of stitch paths for the machine, and the stitch count (how many stitches the design holds) climbs as the patch grows or fills in. On denim, chore and work jackets it just looks right.
Leather gives a rugged, premium look. The logo is laser-engraved (burned in) or debossed (pressed in), so there’s no thread at all. Great on canvas and chore coats.
Chenille is the fuzzy, raised varsity look. If it’s going on a letterman, read our guide to letterman patches instead: that page is about earning and showing letters, this one is about the jacket. Short version, chenille for the varsity jacket, embroidered for nearly everything else.
Club and riding vests or jackets are their own world, with rockers and colors laid out a certain way. Our page on motorcycle patches goes deeper there. Pick that page if you’re doing club colors on leather or denim. Pick this one if it’s a company, team or crew jacket.
PVC is a molded patch, which means a mold gets made first. It’s sewn on, not ironed.

Sew-On, Iron-On or Velcro on a Jacket?
Backing comes in four kinds: stitched (sew-on), heat-pressed (iron-on), hook and loop (Velcro) and peel-and-stick (self-adhesive). On a jacket, here’s how I’d think about it.
Sew-on is the safe bet on almost any jacket. It holds through wear and washing, and it’s the only real choice for PVC and debossed leather patches, because iron-on doesn’t work on those two.
Iron-on is quick, but it needs heat. And a lot of jackets don’t like heat. Nylon shells, coated fabrics, anything with a waterproof finish or puffy insulation… the press can mark or melt them. On a cotton denim jacket iron-on is fine.
Velcro makes sense on work and tactical jackets that already have a loop panel on the chest or sleeve. Swap the patch, keep the jacket.
Self-adhesive is for holding a patch in place for a short time, or before sewing. Not for a jacket you’ll wear all winter.
The catch? Needles make holes. On PU leather (faux leather with a coating) those holes are permanent, and heat can damage the coating too, so tell us exactly where you want it before we sew. Same idea on a waterproof jacket: once a patch is sewn on, we can’t promise it stays waterproof at that spot.
Shop note: on a back patch, we’d sew it every time, even if the jacket could take iron-on. The back flexes more than you’d think. Worth it.
Who Sews It On: Our Jackets or the One You Already Own?
Two ways to go.

Already have the jackets? Then our patch sewing service is the route: buy the patches here, box up your jackets, and we stitch the patches in place. It’s the single thing we’ll do to customer-supplied jackets. Sewing our own patches on, yes; embroidering or printing on them, no.
People always ask if they can mix: some new jackets from us, some old ones from the closet. Yes. Same patches, same placement, both ways.
Getting Your Jacket Patch Color Right
Picture a crew lead who sends us a phone photo of the company jacket and says “match this orange.” On his screen it’s bright. On ours it’s closer to rust. Neither of us is wrong, and that’s the whole problem with matching from a picture.
So here’s what we do. If you give us a PMS code (a Pantone number for an exact brand color) when you order, we match it with a physical Pantone book on the bench, not a monitor. For an embroidered patch the match is in thread, and for chenille it’s yarn.
Real talk: the Pantone system lists over 2,000 solid colors, while Madeira and similar thread lines stock roughly 400 shades. That means thread lands on the nearest shade, close to a 99% match, and a few PMS colors have no thread that matches them exactly.
A few habits help a lot. A PMS number beats any screenshot. Daylight and a printed Pantone guide beat a phone screen. A sample before the big run beats a surprise. And file away the thread numbers you signed off on, so a jacket reorder next fall looks like this year’s. Jacket buyers also catch this: one thread reads slightly differently on matte twill versus a glossy patch.
Leather is the odd one out: with laser engraving or debossing, there’s simply no thread color in play.
One honest warning about screens. Every phone, laptop and monitor shows color its own way, depending on its settings, its make and model, the camera behind the photo, the light and any editing done. Before You Order Jacket Patches
Run through this once and you’ll avoid most of the back-and-forth:
- Send the basics. Your logo or idea, plus patch type, size (up to 5″ for jackets), quantity and backing. One patch is fine, there’s no minimum.
- Design is on us. You won’t pay for design, artwork or the sample proof, and placing the order doesn’t change that.
- Proof in 2 to 3 working days. Art and sample proof come back in that window, along with an approval form for you to review and sign.
- Nothing starts until you sign. Production takes 10 to 15 working days after the signed approval. Need it sooner? Rush runs 3 to 5 working days at an added fee, so share your date early.
- Shipping takes about 1 week. Import duties and taxes, if any, land on your side.
- Your art has to be yours. Either the artwork belongs to you or you hold written permission for every logo, team mark, brand name or character in it, and we can ask to see that. A copyright or trademark claim over the art you supplied is yours to handle, costs to us included.
- Every design gets a look. We’re free to decline any artwork at any stage, even once there’s a quote or an approved mockup. Jackets we won’t patch with: adult content, drug or alcohol products, weapons and violence, and hate speech. See our Artwork Acceptance Policy for everything it covers.
- Changed your mind? Cancelling is open until you approve. Expect a possible $40 sample fee covering design, art and sample work, or $75 if it’s PVC, since a PVC patch needs its own mold.
- After you sign, it’s locked. The order stands as signed: artwork, colors, backing, border and quantity stay put, and it can’t be cancelled.
- Shipping problems. Courier slowdowns, jackets’ patches lost or damaged in transit, and customs holds aren’t refundable. Read the specifics in our Return Policy.
