Custom hoodies are hooded sweatshirts, pullover or zip, that we print or embroider with your logo for schools, companies, teams and merch lines. People choose them because almost everyone will actually wear one, they give you a big canvas front and back, and the hood makes them useful on a cold morning in a way a crewneck isn't.
With hundreds of styles on this page, the hard part is narrowing down. This guide covers a little history and then the questions that really separate one hoodie from another: weight, fabric, zip or pullover, hood details, sizing and decoration.
Who made the first hoodie?
Nobody can say for certain. Hooded garments go back centuries, and several mills were making athletic sweatshirts in the early twentieth century. The company most often credited is Champion, whose own company history says it developed hooded sweatshirts in the 1930s for athletes and for people working in the cold. That's the best-known account, though it comes from the brand itself.
From there the hoodie went to football sidelines and college campuses, then into hip-hop, skate culture and eventually high fashion. Each group gave it a different meaning, from team pride to anonymity to luxury. For a buyer, that history matters for one reason: a hoodie suits almost any audience, so the choice comes down to how it's built.
Start with fabric weight
Fleece weight is listed in ounces per square yard. Brands measure a little differently, but here's a rough guide:
Lightweight (roughly 5–7 oz): thin fleece, French terry or performance knit. Good for layering, active use and most of a Houston fall.
Midweight (roughly 7–9 oz): the everyday standard for school, company and event orders. The Gildan SF600 Softstyle Midweight Full-Zip Sweatshirt is listed at 8.4 oz in an 80/20 ring-spun cotton/polyester.
Heavyweight (roughly 9–13 oz and up): thick, structured and warm. The Lane Seven LS34001 Unisex Thermal Hooded Sweatshirt is an 11.5 oz waffle-knit cotton, and the Shaka Wear SHGMZ-17046 Garment-Dyed Full-Zip hoodie is a 12 oz 100% cotton.
In Houston, midweight is the most versatile pick. Heavyweight looks and feels premium, but outside a few cold fronts a year it mostly lives in closets. We'd save it for merch people buy because they love the feel.
Cotton, blends or polyester?
100% cotton fleece is soft, breathable and prints beautifully, but it shrinks more and can pill. Cotton/poly blends such as 50/50 and 80/20 balance softness with durability and less shrinkage, which is why they carry most team and company orders. The Champion S700 Powerblend Hooded Sweatshirt is a well-known blended option. 100% polyester and performance fleece wick, dry fast and hold bright colors, so they suit athletic teams and sublimated designs.
Pullover or zip?
Pullover hoodies have an unbroken front, which takes the biggest chest prints, and they're usually cheaper. See the full pullover sweatshirts range for more.
Full-zip hoodies go on and off easily, which matters for crews moving between air-conditioned buildings and hot yards. The zipper splits the front, so decoration moves to the left chest and back. Browse full-zip sweatshirts for the zip styles.
If you'd rather skip the hood, crewneck sweatshirts and quarter & half-zip sweatshirts cover those looks.
Hood and trim details to check
Lined hoods use a double layer of fabric. They hold their shape, look finished and add warmth.
Drawcords come flat or round, matching or contrast. Many youth hoodies leave them out for safety, so check if you're buying for kids.
Pockets: kangaroo pockets on pullovers, split pockets on zips.
Cuffs and waistband: rib with a little spandex keeps its shape longer, worth it on hoodies that get sleeves shoved up all day.
Garment-dyed and vintage-wash hoodies have a soft, slightly faded look that's great for retail merch, but color varies a bit piece to piece. For a uniform look across a big order, standard-dyed fleece is more consistent.
Sizing from youth to 5XL, and shrinkage
Many core hoodies run from youth sizes through adult 3XL, and plenty go to 4XL or 5XL. That matters for school spirit wear and company orders where one style has to fit everyone. Gildan and Champion both carry youth hoodies alongside their adult styles, and LAT adds heavyweight and vintage-wash looks.
Cotton-rich hoodies can shrink a few percent in length after hot washing and drying. Blends shrink less, and some cotton styles are pre-shrunk. If your crowd likes a relaxed fit, size up on heavy cotton.
Where the logo goes
Typical decoration sizes on adult hoodies:
Left chest: about 3.5–4 in wide, embroidered or printed.
Full front: often 10–12 in wide, placed above the kangaroo pocket so the pocket seam doesn't cut through the art.
Back: usually 12–14 in wide, set low enough that the hood doesn't hide the top when it hangs down.
Hood and sleeves: a small mark on the side of the hood or a vertical print down one sleeve adds a lot for little cost.
Custom printing, including screen printing and DTF, is best for big front and back art. Custom embroidery suits left-chest and sleeve logos and looks especially good on heavier fleece. Our decoration method guide helps you match the method to your design.
Hoodies for Houston schools, crews and brands
A few ways local groups typically use them:
A high school booster club might order a midweight 50/50 pullover in school colors with a full-front mascot, plus youth sizes for younger siblings.
An HVAC or construction company might choose a full-zip with an embroidered left-chest logo and a back print, so crews can layer up at dawn and shed it by lunch.
A coffee shop or brewery might sell a soft heavyweight cotton hoodie as merch.
