Dad hats usually go to people who want a cap somebody will wear on a Saturday, not just on shift. A coffee shop's merch shelf. A brewery taproom. A church group, a family reunion, a small brand's first run of swag. Those are the folks who ask us for custom dad hats, and before they ever talk logo, they ask how the cap looks and feels. A dad hat is a low-profile cap, most often six panels with an unstructured crown (soft front, no stiff panel behind it), a pre-curved bill and a strap at the back. We stitch your logo on it, and one cap is fine. No minimum.

Custom Dad Hats by Finish: Washed, Peached or Brushed?

Here's the thing. Most of the 48 caps in this category are cotton twill, and in a product grid they look a lot alike. What sets them apart is the finish the listing names. So that's where we start.

Bio-washed and garment-washed chino

The classic dad hat. The Valucap VC300A is 100% cotton bio-washed chino twill in 42 colors. Need kid sizes? The VC300Y is the youth version in the same bio-washed chino, 11 colors. The LEGACY EZA is garment-washed cotton twill with a buckle strap and 35 colors, and the Atlantis FRASER is organic garment-washed cotton twill, if that matters to your brand.

Pigment-dyed and enzyme-washed

These name a dye or wash step right in the fabric line. The Adams LP101 Optimum is pigment-dyed, enzyme-washed cotton twill with a nylon Cool-Crown mesh lining inside, and it has the longest color list here at 44. Comfort Colors makes a pair at 8.5 oz (ounces per square yard, so a bigger number means heavier cloth): the CCSC0 Sunwashed is pigment-dyed, the CCWC0 Coastal Washed is enzyme-washed, and both have a brushed finish and a metal slider strap. The Valucap SP500 is pigment-dyed cotton twill in 19 colors.

For women's cuts, the Infinity Her CASSIE (16 colors) and HATTIE use pigment-washed cotton twill.

Peached, brushed and sueded

The Richardson 326 is 100% cotton peach twill with a tri-glide buckle. The YP Classics 6245PT and the women's Infinity Her KATE are peached twill too, and the Valucap AH35 is peach-washed cotton. On the brushed side, Valucap makes a light and a heavy one: the VC200 is lightweight brushed cotton twill, the 9610 is heavy brushed cotton twill. The Big Accessories BX001 comes in 18 colors and has a youth twin, the BX001Y. Sueded? The Big Accessories BA714 Lux and the Russell Athletic UB87UHD.

People always ask which of these feels softest. Honest answer: a listing can't tell you that, and we won't guess. Since there's no minimum, buy one of each finish you're torn between and put them on real heads. Easiest test you'll run.

Not Everything Here Is Soft Cotton Twill

A few caps in this category break the pattern. Good to know before you pick from photos:

  • Corduroy: the Big Accessories BA703 (cotton corduroy, brass buckle) and the LEGACY Salt Wash Corduroy cap, which is a cotton blend with a brass snap buckle.
  • Canvas - the Big Accessories BA610 is brushed cotton canvas with a heavy enzyme garment wash. The DRI DUCK 3371 Teton is 8 oz wax-coated canvas, one color only.
  • Heavy twill: DRI DUCK 3205 Truman, 14 oz calvary twill.
  • Crinkle nylon, the BA715.
  • Recycled polyester: Richardson 254RE, one color.
  • Cotton/poly blend: the women's Kati SN20W, 60/40 washed cotton/polyester.
  • Mesh back: the Sportsman SP1750, garment-washed chino twill with a mesh back and a COOLMAX sweatband.

And one heads-up. The YP Classics 6389CV is filed under dad hats, but its listing says structured mid-profile crown and snapback. That's not a soft dad hat. If a firm front is what you want, browse our snapback caps too. If you want the slouchy look, skip it.

We get asked if a dad hat is just a baseball cap with a softer front. Pretty much. If your crew wants a taller, stiffer crown, browse custom baseball caps instead. If you like the low look but want a different panel layout, five-panel hats are next door.

How Do You Design Dad Hats People Actually Wear?

Keep it small and keep it quiet. That's most of it.

Embroidered dad hats are our default. Thread suits a cap, and custom embroidery is what we'd reach for first on every style above. The front gets the logo, and a side or back mark adds a detail without crowding it.

Downside of a soft crown? Nothing stiff sits behind the front to hold it flat. A big, dense logo can pucker the fabric (make it bunch up around the stitches). So we'd keep it to flat embroidery (the standard stitched logo that sits flat), a modest size and fewer thread colors. Save 3D puff embroidery, the raised look with foam under the stitches, for a structured cap. It holds puff a lot better.

Shop note: on a six-panel front, two panels meet right in the middle. Your logo crosses that seam whether you like it or not. We digitize caps from the center out (digitizing is turning your logo into the stitch file the machine follows), so centered art lines up on that seam.

Want a rugged look instead of stitching straight on? A sewn-on embroidered or leather patch works on a dad hat too. We make our patches in our own facility. Before any of it, we need your logo, and our Artwork Acceptance Policy covers what happens with the file you send. Your stitch file gets saved after digitizing, so a reorder next spring starts from the same file.

Which Strap, What Size, and How Long?

Every cap here is listed as Adjustable or One Size. The strap is where they differ:

Slide or tri-glide buckle on the Imperial X210B (with a woven Imperial label, 25 colors), the Richardson 326, the Unionwear F6BCUTE and the Infinity Her KATE. A self-fabric strap with a brass buckle on the BA703 and BA614. A metal slider on both Comfort Colors caps. Hook-and-loop on the BX880, the BA714 and The Game GB510, which adds a D-ring. A webbing strap with a technical buckle on the nylon BA715.

Mix styles and colors in one order of custom embroidered dad hats if you like. What moves the price is the cap you pick, the stitch count (how many stitches your logo takes), the logo size, how many spots you stitch and the quantity. Shortlist a couple of caps from the grid, put the style numbers and your logo in our quote form, and we'll come back with a number for each.

Proof first: a picture of your logo on the actual cap reaches you within 2–3 working days. Once you say go, a smaller run of hats is done in 7–10 working days. Planning a big run of custom dad caps for an event? Get the date from us before you promise it to anyone.
