Ports have always been where the world's goods change hands, from ancient Alexandria to the container terminals stretched along the Houston Ship Channel today. The shipping container turned dock work from a crowd of people carrying sacks into a fast, mechanized operation of cranes, straddle carriers and yard tractors. What hasn't changed is that people still work on the ground between those machines, and their port and dock uniforms are part of what keeps them alive.
A longshore crew deals with heavy equipment moving in every direction, wet concrete, salt air, diesel exhaust and long shifts in the sun. Clothing for that environment has to be visible, tough and comfortable enough that people keep it on for the whole shift.
What each crew needs on the terminal
Lashers, checkers and ground crew
These are the workers on foot, walking between stacks, securing containers and checking numbers while cranes swing overhead and yard trucks race past. Hi-vis tees or polos with reflective tape, layered under a hi-vis work vest or a hi-vis jacket, make them easy to spot. Rugged work pants with reinforced knees and deep pockets for gloves and lashing tools round out the kit.
Equipment operators
Crane, top-pick and yard tractor operators spend most of the shift in a cab, but they climb in and out constantly and often walk the yard at shift change. A breathable hi-vis shirt keeps them visible on foot and comfortable in the cab. Pants with stretch make climbing ladders and stairs easier.
Breakbulk and warehouse staff
Breakbulk and warehouse crews handle steel, pipe, project cargo and palletized goods. Their clothing needs to stand up to abrasion. Heavy poly-cotton or canvas work shirts and pants, reinforced in the knees, with a hi-vis layer when working near equipment, serve them best.
Marine clerks, supervisors and gate staff
Supervisors and clerks need to be distinct from the general crew, often through a different hi-vis color or a branded jacket. Gate and office staff who deal with truckers and customers usually wear embroidered polos or woven shirts, which you'll find alongside hi-vis gear in our port and dock apparel collection.
Fabrics for salt, sun and rain
Coastal ports are hard on fabric. Salt air, sun and constant moisture fade colors and weaken cheap seams. Moisture-wicking polyester knits work well for shirts because they dry fast and resist fading better than cotton. For pants, durable cotton-poly twill or canvas with reinforced seams lasts longer than lightweight trousers.
Gulf Coast storms arrive fast, so keep hi-vis rain jackets and bibs available. Winter on the water can be surprisingly cold with the wind, and hi-vis softshells or insulated jackets let crews layer without losing visibility. Choose jackets with zippered pockets so radios and phones don't get soaked or dropped.
Don't overlook sun exposure. Crews on an open terminal can spend eight or more hours with no shade, and long-sleeve hi-vis tees made from lightweight, breathable knit often feel cooler than a short sleeve once the sun is high. Add a hi-vis cap or a cap in your company color for the head and neck, and your crew will thank you by August.
Visibility and safety on the dock
OSHA has specific standards for marine terminals and longshoring, and terminal operators layer their own rules on top. High-visibility apparel is common across port operations because people on foot share space with very large equipment. In the U.S., hi-vis garments are classified under ANSI/ISEA 107. The required class is up to your terminal's safety program, and the label on the manufacturer's garment is what proves it.
Branding has to respect that:
- Keep logos and names clear of the reflective tape.
- Avoid covering large areas of the fluorescent background with decoration.
- If any role in your operation requires flame-resistant apparel, such as hot work near cargo or welding, the FR protection comes from the certified garment, and decoration must use FR-compatible materials per the garment maker. Ask us about decoration options for FR garments.
Logos and identification for port crews
On a busy terminal, it helps to know which company or crew someone belongs to. Embroidered logos on the left chest of hi-vis polos, jackets and caps last through heavy laundering. A company name across the back, placed between reflective bands, makes crews identifiable at a distance.
Sublimation printing works on white or light-colored polyester performance shirts. On fluorescent hi-vis tees, it's limited to a small mark kept off the reflective tape and out of the required background area, and you should confirm with the garment maker first; embroidery is the safer default for hi-vis. Name embroidery helps supervisors manage rotating gangs and new hires. Stevedoring companies that work several terminals often add a terminal name on the sleeve while keeping the chest logo the same everywhere.
Planning your port uniform order
Dock work is seasonal and shift-based, and the crew roster can change week to week. Plan ahead:
- Separate by role. Ground crew, operators, warehouse staff and supervisors may each need different garments.
- Order a full size run. Include tall sizes and women's cuts, since fit affects comfort and safety near equipment.
- Stock spares. Keep common sizes on hand for new hires and replacement gear torn on the job.
- Watch the vessel schedule. A run of big ship calls means more gangs on the dock, so restock before the busy weeks rather than during them.
Talk to your crew leads about what wears out first. Pants and vests often go before shirts on a container terminal, so adjust quantities to match.
Outfit your dock crew
Every container that leaves a port passes through the hands of crews on the ground, and they deserve gear that keeps them seen and comfortable. Browse our port, dock and marine cargo handling uniform collection for hi-vis shirts, vests, jackets and durable work pants. Houston Embroidery Service will embroider your logo so your crews stand out on any terminal. Request a quote when you're ready.
Frequently asked questions
What do longshore and port workers wear?
Port and dock workers usually wear high-visibility shirts, vests or jackets over durable work pants with reinforced knees. Equipment operators wear breathable hi-vis shirts, while supervisors and clerks often wear a distinct color or branded jacket. Rain gear and insulated hi-vis layers are added for wet and windy weather.
Is hi-vis clothing required at marine terminals?
Most terminals require high-visibility apparel for workers on foot because they share space with cranes, yard tractors and trucks. OSHA has marine terminal and longshoring standards, and terminal operators set their own rules. Hi-vis garments in the U.S. are classified under ANSI/ISEA 107, and your safety program sets the required class.
What fabric holds up best in a coastal port?
Moisture-wicking polyester knits resist fading and dry quickly in salt air and humidity, making them a good choice for shirts. For pants, cotton-poly twill or canvas with reinforced seams lasts longer. Rain jackets with sealed seams and zippered pockets help crews deal with sudden Gulf Coast storms.
Can logos go on hi-vis port vests and jackets?
Yes, logos can be embroidered on hi-vis gear as long as they stay off the reflective tape and do not cover large areas of the fluorescent background. A left-chest logo and a company name on the back between tape bands are common choices for port crews.
How many uniforms should each dock worker have?
Most companies issue several shirts and pants per person so gear can rotate through the wash, plus a vest or jacket for each worker. Keep extra common sizes for new hires and torn gear, and adjust quantities after you see which items wear out first on your terminal.
