Before a single wall goes up, somebody has to clear the lot, cut the grades, haul off the spoils and get the pad ready. Site prep crews spend their days surrounded by dozers, excavators, scrapers and dump trucks, on ground that turns to soup after one good Houston rain. Excavation uniforms for that kind of work have one job above all: make sure the people on foot are impossible to miss.
People have been moving earth on purpose for thousands of years, from ancient canals to the railroad cuts and subway tunnels of the industrial age. The machines got bigger, but the basic risk stayed the same. A worker on the ground next to a large machine is hard to see, and clothing is one of the simplest ways to change that.
The short list: visibility, durability, heat
If you only remember three things about outfitting a dirt crew, make it these. Ground workers need high-visibility gear around equipment. Everything they wear will meet mud, clay, dust and fuel. And for most of the year, the heat is the thing that actually makes people miserable.
Gear by job on a dirt crew
Grade checkers, spotters and laborers
These are the people walking the site with a rod, a shovel or a radio while machines move around them. A hi-vis vest is the first thing to hand them. Vests go over anything, come off easily for a break and can be replaced cheaply when they get shredded. A zip-front style with a few secure pockets for a phone, grade stakes or a marker works well.
Hot-day base layer
Under the vest, or on its own when the class allows, a fluorescent hi-vis tee is the summer standard. Moisture-wicking polyester is the right call here because it dries fast and stays lighter than cotton. Classes don't stack, though. A vest pulled over a tee doesn't make a higher class, so match the certified garment to the class your site or permit requires, whether that's a Class 2 shirt or a sleeved Class 3 garment, or a Class 2 top with Class E pants.
Operators, foremen and survey staff
Operators who spend most of the day in a cab, along with foremen and layout people, often prefer a woven work shirt. It looks more professional when meeting the GC or an engineer, and long sleeves block sun on the walk across an open lot. A chest pocket with a pen slot is a small detail that gets used all day. When they step out into active areas, a vest goes on top.
Don't forget pants and hats
Long, durable pants are a must on a site full of rock, rebar and debris. Look for canvas or ripstop with reinforced knees and a gusseted crotch. A ball cap or a hard hat brim covers part of the sun problem. Hi-vis caps add a bit of color for off-site wear, but they aren't ANSI-rated and never replace a hard hat where one is required. Our excavation crew apparel collection includes the pants, tees and vests we decorate most.
Fabric choices for mud and heat
Clay soil around Houston clings to everything, and cotton soaks up both mud and sweat. Poly-cotton or polyester shirts rinse cleaner and dry faster. Stain-release finishes help keep woven shirts looking presentable a little longer. For pants, heavier fabrics are worth the extra weight because thin pants rip on the first piece of broken concrete.
Weather layers matter here more than people expect. Open sites have no shade and no windbreak. A lightweight hi-vis rain jacket for summer storms and an insulated jacket for cold mornings keep crews working without hiding their visibility under dark outerwear.
A word on safety requirements
High-visibility clothing for workers around equipment or traffic is rated under ANSI/ISEA 107, and the class on the garment's label is what determines whether it meets your requirement. Your safety plan, the general contractor and any roadway permit will tell you what class is needed. The OSHA construction resources cover the broader rules on excavations, trenching and heavy equipment.
Logos don't change any of that. Put embroidery where it won't cover reflective striping or eat into the fluorescent background, and remember that a branded vest is only one piece of the PPE your crew needs on an active site.
Putting your brand on a dirt crew
Embroidery is the most practical choice for site prep apparel because it outlasts the hard washing and rough handling. A compact left-chest logo works on vests, tees and woven shirts. Caps with a front logo are an easy win that crews actually like wearing.
Sublimation works on white or light polyester performance tees. On fluorescent hi-vis tees, keep it to a small mark off the reflective tape and outside the required background area, and confirm with the garment maker; embroidery is the safer default for hi-vis. Adding names to foremen's shirts helps the GC and inspectors find the right person quickly. Dirt crews grow fast when a big subdivision or a TxDOT job lands, so save a photo of an approved shirt and use it as the reference for every new batch.
Planning the order
Sizes on a dirt crew run from small to very large, so collect them person by person instead of ordering a pile of larges. Include women's sizes where needed. Hi-vis gear and work pants wear out fast in this trade, so keep a box of spares in common sizes for new hires and replacements. Site prep slows when the ground is saturated, so a rainy stretch is a good time to inventory vests, toss the faded ones and restock before the next push.
Equip your crew

Frequently asked questions
What do excavation workers wear for safety?
Excavation crews typically wear hi-vis vests or shirts around equipment, hard hats, safety boots, gloves and eye protection as their safety plan requires. Durable long pants with reinforced knees protect against debris. Hi-vis garments should carry an ANSI/ISEA 107 class on the label that matches your requirement. Uniforms supplement PPE; they don't replace it.
Are hi-vis T-shirts acceptable on an excavation site?
A certified hi-vis tee can meet certain classes, and it's often the most comfortable option in Houston heat. Whether it's enough depends on your site rules, the general contractor and any roadway exposure. Layering a vest over a tee doesn't raise the class. If an area requires Class 3, use a garment rated Class 3, typically with sleeves, or a Class 2 top paired with Class E pants.
What pants are best for site prep and dirt work?
Look for durable canvas, duck or ripstop work pants with reinforced knees and a gusseted crotch for kneeling and climbing. Stain-resistant finishes help, and a relaxed fit makes it easier to get on and off equipment. In wet months, pants that dry quickly are more comfortable than heavy cotton that stays soaked.
How do I keep crew uniforms consistent across multiple orders?
Keep a simple record of each order: the garment style numbers, colors and where the logo sits. Choose garments that are likely to stay available so reorders match. Ordering a few spares in common sizes also helps new hires look like the rest of the crew on their first day.
