Custom duffel bags are large, soft-sided bags with one main compartment and carry handles, decorated with your logo, team name or player names. Buyers pick them because nothing else swallows bulky, awkward gear as easily: pads, cleats, coveralls, towels or a week of clothes.
A duffel is mostly empty space with handles. That sounds like a criticism, but it's exactly why the design has lasted.
A short history of the duffel
The name is usually traced to Duffel, a town near Antwerp in Belgium known for a thick, coarse woolen cloth. Over time the word moved from the fabric to the bag. Sailors and soldiers relied on tough cylindrical kit bags they could stuff, sling and stack, and that shape passed into sports and travel. The V&A's Bags: Inside Out exhibition put practical carrying forms like this in the wider story of bag design.
One compartment: the strength and the problem
A single open interior takes loads that would never fit a backpack. A helmet, boots and rolled work clothes go in without a fight. The downside shows up when you need something small: keys and chargers sink to the bottom, a wet towel soaks the clean shirt, and muddy cleats dirty everything else.
Modern duffels fix that with a few targeted features rather than a full organizer:
End or side shoe tunnels: a separate zippered pocket that keeps footwear away from clean clothes. Vented versions let damp shoes breathe.
Wet/dry pockets: a lined pocket for swimsuits, towels or sweaty gear.
Small exterior pockets: for a phone, badge or wallet.
Think about what the bag will really carry. A team hauling equipment needs volume and a tough base. A traveler cares more about a shoe pocket and a quick-grab sleeve.
Duffel bag sizes and capacity
Duffels are sold by liters or length, and the right size depends on the trip.
Small gym duffels, roughly 25 to 40 L, hold a change of clothes and shoes. The Adidas AB603 Defender 5 Small Duffel is a good example, with a water-resistant finish.
Weekend and travel bags, roughly 35 to 60 L, suit overnight trips and away games. The Nomadix 35L Weekender Duffel is a nylon travel bag with pockets and a zip closure, and the BAGedge Getaway Duffel gives a more casual, travel-luggage look.
Large and XL bags, 60 L and up, carry equipment or a week of gear. The Liberty Bags SB291614 XL Sports Bag has a wide mouth, recycled polyester body and a padded shoulder strap.
Carrying comfort and strap padding
As capacity grows, comfort becomes the limit. A small bag is easy by its handles. A full large bag can weigh more than anyone wants to hold at arm's length, so a padded, adjustable shoulder strap stops being a nice extra and becomes a requirement. Look for strap anchors sewn into reinforced areas, a handle wrap that holds both handles together, and a firm base that stops the bag slumping on the bus floor. If you're choosing between two bags, we'd pick the one with the better strap over the one with an extra pocket.
Fabric: polyester, nylon and the travel look
Most sports duffels are polyester: good price, lots of colors, easy to wipe down. Nylon is lighter and stronger for its weight, which is why it shows up on travel bags. Heavy canvas duffels trimmed with webbing look more like weekend luggage than team gear and take embroidery beautifully, but they're heavier and slower to dry.
Brands here cover both directions. Adidas focuses on team bags. Liberty Bags offers sports and value duffels in many sizes. BAGedge leans promotional and travel, including conference-style haulers.
Where logos go on a duffel
The visible faces are the long sides and the two ends.
End panels or end pockets: often around 3 to 4 in wide for embroidery, depending on shape and whether the panel opens.
Main side panel: a larger name or logo, commonly 6 to 10 in wide on medium and large bags, when the fabric can be reached from inside.
Side pocket: a smaller logo around 4 to 5 in, a common fallback when the main side is lined or padded.
Zippers, piping and seams cut across many panels, so the usable area is often smaller than the bag looks. Embroidery gives a durable finish on polyester, nylon or canvas. When a panel can't be hooped, a sewn-on patch solves the access problem. Player names on the end panel are common for team orders, and the files are set up through embroidery digitizing with the bag fabric in mind, since thin polyester puckers under dense fills.
How Houston groups use duffels
School sports: football, volleyball and soccer programs often give each athlete a matching bag with a name on the end. Shoe tunnels matter for cleats.
Rotation crews: offshore workers and plant turnaround crews heading out for a week or two need a big, tough bag with a padded strap and a separate pocket for boots. Dark colors hide grime.
Gyms: a branded small duffel makes a good membership welcome gift or front-desk retail item.
Gear left zipped in a bag overnight in Houston humidity turns musty fast. A vented shoe pocket helps, and so does unpacking after practice.

Duffel bag questions, answered
Can each bag have a different name? Yes. Personalized names on end panels are common for teams; send the name list with the order.
Is a shoulder strap really necessary? For small gym bags, handles are enough. For boots or equipment, a padded strap is worth it.
Will embroidery go on the main side panel? Often, but some bags are lined or padded there. A side pocket or patch is the fallback.
Which lasts longer, canvas or polyester? Both can last. Canvas resists abrasion and looks classic; polyester resists water and weighs less.
