Custom fleece vests are sleeveless zip-up layers made of soft polyester fleece, embroidered with your logo. People pick them because they're warm without weight, wash easily and look right over almost anything, from a company polo on a jobsite to a button-down in a client meeting.
That range is why fleece vests show up in so many of our orders. Sales teams wear them to meetings, superintendents wear them on site at 7 a.m., and golfers wear them on the first tee before the sun burns the chill off.
A short note on where fleece came from
Malden Mills (now Polartec) developed synthetic fleece around 1979, working with outdoor brands that wanted a lighter alternative to wool. Within a few decades it had spread into workwear, corporate uniforms and team gear. That's all the history a buyer needs. The more useful question is which kind of fleece you're actually getting.
Three fleece constructions that wear very differently
"Fleece" covers several fabrics, and the vests in this category split into a few clear types.
Polar fleece. The classic brushed polyester with raised pile on one or both sides. It's warm, light, breathable and quick to dry. It's also the type most likely to pill, especially at lower price points. The Columbia 212488 Men's Steens Mountain Vest is a familiar example of the open-pile outdoor style.
Sweater-knit fleece. A flat, knit-look face with a soft fleece back. It looks more like a wool sweater than outdoor gear, which is why corporate buyers love it. The North End NE714 Men's Aura Sweater Fleece Vest uses an 11 oz boucle sweater fleece with a textured, polished face.
Bonded or soft-shell-backed fleece. Fleece laminated to a tighter, smoother outer fabric. It blocks more wind, shrugs off light moisture and gives embroidery a firmer surface. The CORE365 CE701 Cruise Bonded Soft Shell Vest is a value option in this style. If wind is the main enemy, also browse Soft Shell Vests.
Microfleece, midweight or heavyweight
Weight is the quickest way to match a vest to its job.
Microfleece is thin. It layers under a jacket or over a polo without bulk and is ideal for chilly offices.
Midweight is the workhorse for uniform programs: warm enough alone on a cool morning, still slim enough under a shell.
Heavyweight has deep pile and real warmth, but it's bulky and too much for most Texas days.
For Houston, microfleece and midweight cover nearly everything. We rarely recommend the heaviest pile here unless the vest is going somewhere colder.
Full-zip, snap or quarter-zip
Most fleece vests use a full-length zipper. It's easy to vent, quick to pull on over a collar and gives a clean line for a chest logo. Snap fronts and quarter-zips read more casual and lifestyle. The vineyard vines O001401 Men's Harbor Fleece Vest, made from recycled polyester fleece with a full zip and stretch binding, suits country-club, hospitality and financial-services programs.
Fit for men, women and youth
Fit varies a lot by brand. Men's cuts are generally straight and roomy. Women's cuts are shaped through the waist and often shorter, so please don't just order small men's sizes for women. Many styles in this category come as matched men's and women's pairs, which keeps a mixed team looking consistent. If you need youth sizes for a school or club, tell us and we'll check which styles offer them.
Think about the layer underneath. A vest sized over a polo can feel snug over a hoodie or heavy oxford. When in doubt, have a few staff try samples before you place the full order.
How fleece vests differ from our other vest categories
Our Vests range is split into several groups, and a few products could fairly sit in more than one.
Fleece vests get their warmth from the fabric's pile alone. There's no separate fill or quilting, so they're soft, quiet and breathable, but less wind resistant than shell-faced vests. Puffer Vests use down or synthetic fill in baffles for more warmth per ounce and a slick nylon face. Quilted Vests use stitched patterns to hold a thinner insulation and look more tailored. Winter Vests are the broad cold-weather group, covering insulated, soft-shell and hybrid builds.
If the brief is "softest, most casual layer for indoors and mild days," fleece is the answer. If you need sleeves, our Fleece Jackets come in the same fabrics.
Fleece vests in Houston
Our winters are short, but mornings from November into March regularly start in the 40s and 50s. A fleece vest is exactly right for that and comes off easily by lunch. It also solves the opposite problem: offices, labs and hospitals around the Texas Medical Center run the air conditioning cold all year, and lots of staff keep a vest on the back of their chair.
Plant supervisors and field managers wear them over a company polo on cool mornings, outside FR areas. Golf outings, school spirit wear and corporate gifts round out the list. Columbia, Marmot and North End cover the range from outdoor-technical to polished corporate.
Embroidering fleece vests well
Fleece takes embroidery beautifully when it's set up correctly. The catch is the pile: it's soft and lofty, so fine stitches can sink and disappear.
Left chest: about 3.5 to 4 in wide is our standard.
Back yoke: a company name or website just below the collar is a popular second spot.
Full back: possible, but heavy on fleece and less common.
To keep stitches sitting on top, we lay a water-soluble topping over the fabric during stitching and remove it afterward. A stabilizer on the inside stops the fleece from stretching. Good embroidery digitizing uses a light underlay to tack the pile down and keeps lettering bold rather than thin.
When a logo has tiny text or hairline details, a custom patch is often the better route because it brings its own flat surface. For most logos, though, direct custom embroidery gives fleece a premium finish.
What people ask before ordering fleece vests
Will a fleece vest pill? Lower-cost polar fleece pills faster. Sweater-knit and anti-pill fleeces hold up better. Washing inside out and avoiding high dryer heat helps.
How should we wash them? Cold, inside out, with similar fabrics. Tumble dry low or hang dry, and skip fabric softener, which mats the pile.
What's the minimum order? It depends on the style and decoration method. Send us your quantity and logo and we'll confirm.
How long does an order take? That depends on stock, quantity and design. Ask for a current estimate with your quote, and order early in the fall when demand climbs.
