Custom quilted jackets are lightly insulated jackets where rows of stitching hold a thin layer of fill flat between the shell and lining, finished with your embroidered logo. They're a favorite for corporate gifts and staff layers because they look tailored, weigh very little and suit a short Gulf Coast winter.
Quilting looks decorative, but it started as a practical fix. Sandwich a soft filling between two fabrics and it shifts, bunches and thins with wear. Stitch through all three layers and it stays put, giving you a flat, even insulated fabric that can be cut and sewn like any other cloth. People have quilted clothing for centuries, from padded garments worn under armor to everyday jackets, and museum pieces such as this Met quilted jacket show how long the technique has been around. Today's versions apply the same idea to nylon or polyester shells and thin synthetic insulation.
Quilted jacket vs puffer jacket
The two are relatives, and some jackets sit in between, but they behave differently.
A puffer jacket is built around loft. Thick fill in large chambers is the whole point: more trapped air, more warmth.
A quilted jacket uses a thinner layer held flat by closer stitching. It's lighter and slimmer, layers easily under a coat or over a shirt, and looks more polished. It gives less warmth than a full puffer but a lot more than an unlined jacket. Think of it as a mid-season layer, not a deep-winter coat. Factories like quilting for another reason too: bonding shell, fill and lining into one stable layer before assembly makes the fabric easier to cut and keeps the insulation evenly spread for the life of the jacket.
Diamond, channel or box quilting?
The stitch pattern changes the look, the warmth and how easy the jacket is to brand.
Diamond quilting is the classic pattern, long associated with country and equestrian jackets. The angled lines hold fill in every direction and look traditional and a little dressy.
Channel quilting runs straight horizontal lines across the body. It reads sporty and modern, and wider channels hold slightly more loft.
Box quilting uses small square cells. It keeps fill very even but adds more stitch lines, and each one pinches the insulation a little.
In a light everyday jacket the warmth difference between patterns is small. The visual difference is big, and so is the effect on decoration.
Why the stitch pattern decides where a logo can go
Every quilt line is a ridge with a dip on each side. A logo stitched across several lines sits unevenly, with letters sinking into the valleys and breaking at the seams. Small box quilting is the hardest surface to decorate, with edge-to-edge diamond close behind.
The jackets that brand most easily have a smooth zone built in: an unquilted shoulder yoke, a plain chest panel, a flat placket or a smooth collar. Picking a jacket with one of those solves the decoration problem before anyone digitizes artwork. If you love a jacket that's quilted everywhere, a patch is usually the cleanest answer.

Choosing a quilted jacket for your team
Weight. Most quilted jackets are lightweight, and that's a strength in Houston. Winters are short, mornings may sit in the 40s and afternoons warm up fast. A light quilted jacket handles that swing far better than a heavy coat.
Fill. Check whether the insulation is recycled polyester, standard synthetic or down. Synthetic washes more easily and copes better with damp weather, which is why we'd pick it for most staff programs.
Pattern. Diamond for a polished, corporate look. Channel for sporty teams.
Shell. A water-resistant finish helps with Gulf Coast drizzle.
Gifting. Quilted jackets are one of the most popular corporate gifts we see, because they look upscale, fit a wide range of body types and get worn.
If staff need real cold-weather protection, our Winter Jackets page goes heavier, and the full Jackets section has everything else.
As an example, an engineering firm planning holiday gifts for 75 employees might choose a diamond-quilted jacket in navy and black, offer men's and women's cuts, and place a small logo on the smooth chest area.
Logo sizes for quilted outerwear
Typical guidance:
Left chest: about 3 to 3.5 inches wide, placed on a smooth yoke, chest panel or near the placket where the surface is flat.
Across quilting: use a custom patch. Its firm backing bridges the stitch lines and sits flat.
Back: a large back design usually works only on a jacket with a smooth back yoke, or as a patch.
Density: keep stitch counts moderate so the needle doesn't flatten insulation or pull the thin shell.
Custom embroidery looks great on smooth zones, and our embroidery digitizing team adjusts the file for a quilted surface.
Quilted jacket questions answered
Is a quilted jacket warm enough for Houston? For most winter days, yes. It's a light layer, not a heavy coat.
Can you embroider over the quilting? You can, but it rarely looks clean. Choose a jacket with a smooth panel or use a patch.
Diamond or channel? Diamond for a classic corporate look, channel for a sporty modern one.
How is it different from a puffer? Quilted jackets are flatter and lighter. Puffers are thicker and warmer.
Will the quilt lines loosen in the wash? Not on a well-made jacket. Close the zippers, wash on gentle and tumble dry low so the fill stays even.
